Actress Olivia Colman is a new voice to the His Dark Materials series, and she slips easily into Lyra's boots. Set after the events of THE AMBER SPYGLASS, this short story, originally written 16 years ago for a charity auction, serves as an effective bridge between that book and the second in Pullman's new Book of Dust trilogy, THE SECRET COMMONWEALTH. Lyra and her daemon, Pantalaimon, meet with the consul of the witches in Trollesund--Lyra has questions about the nature of the human/daemon bond. Colman captures Lyra and Pan's rapid-fire, affectionate bickering flawlessly. SERPENTINE will mean most to fans of the series, another puzzle piece that helps to complete the full picture of this fantastic world. J.M.D. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine

Gr 5 Up-Set after the events of The Amber Spyglass, Pullman's short novella finds teenage Lyra Silvertongue and her daemon, Pantalaimon, heading north to revisit Trollesund, the Arctic town where she first met the aeronaut Lee Scoresby and Iorek Byrnison, the armored bear. Their mission is to find and speak with the witch-consul, Dr. Lanselius, and hopefully find answers to their questions about their ability to separate. Olivia Colman's narration is top-notch; here's hoping audiobook fans have more of her readings to look forward to in the future. VERDICT This short tale addresses a question many series fans have pondered. It will be a quick, gratifying listen for those already immersed in Pullman's world.-Stephanie Klose, Library Journal
