President James Garfield was walking through a train station when a gunman shot him in the back. A mad scene erupted as Garfield bled on the floor and a crowd surrounded the shooter. Who was this strange man and why had he shot the new president? The answers to those questions became clear as Garfield lay wounded, fighting for life while misguided doctors did more harm than good. In a drama that stretched for weeks, the United States saw a second president die from an assassin's bullet. And although it lasted only months, the presidency of James Garfield changed his country in ways few people today grasp.

Grades 5-8 With lively, narrative-driven text and plenty of primary source material neatly woven through, these entries in the Assassins' America series profile presidents and their assassins, offer illuminating context, and consider how those assassinations affected the trajectory of U.S. history. President Garfield's Killer explains Garfield's dissatisfaction with cronyism in federal government, the way his plans to break up the spoils system contributed to his killer's anger, and the unsanitary medical treatment that ultimately led to his death. Engagingly written with an emphasis on high drama and characterization, these will definitely appeal to readers who favor fiction, though they'll come away with plenty of facts at the same time.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2018, American Library Association.)
