Gr 1-3-In a picture book format, these titles explore mindfulness through fun and active illustrations of mindfulness-based techniques in vibrant colors. Each activity depicted is paired with an explanation that describes how it encourages mindfulness, and what is going on in the body during those practices. While the activities are interesting and the illustrations are engaging, this text appears to be aimed more at caregivers and educators working with younger children than the younger readers themselves. VERDICT With the range and detail of activities described, these titles would pair well with other classroom activities ranging from science lessons to physical education.

Grades K-3 A psychologist, an editor, and an illustrator collaborated to create Mindful Spaces, a powerful series (2 new titles) aimed at teaching mindfulness to children in a straightforward and elegant manner. The concepts of being present, observing the world, handling emotions, and finding calm are threaded throughout the series, with different contexts for achieving those goals. Friendly drawings in a mix of traditional and digital styles depict children with a variety of abilities and identities. Detailed and illustrated sections for activities and exercises pair concrete examples of mindful practices with child-friendly reasons for completing them. "Activities" focus on creating, like assembling a pinwheel to observe breath. "Exercises" focus on taking action, like undertaking a nature treasure hunt to employ sensory awareness. Mindfulness and Nature invokes the natural world as a palette for achieving personal insight and emotional regulation through curiosity and sensory experiences outdoors. The four titles promote careful awareness of the surrounding world and full use of the senses. Each book concludes with a page of "Mindfulness Tips" and an index highlighting exercises and activities for quick reference. The series frequently encourages collaboration with an adult, and indeed most of the activities would make fantastic experiential learning for child-caregiver pairs, small groups, and classroom settings.
